Hi Guys,

My name is Mat and I am a member as well as the owner of Funct Fitness and for the best part of two years functional training has been the focus of my well-being. From an early age my passion for physical activity was evident; swimming, karate, rugby and surfing was all part of my upbringing. At the age of 16 I went into the military and then later joined the Royal Air Force where I served five years.

For many years however my training regime was this:-

- Trip to the local "boring" gym

- Isolate muscle groups and exert all my energy pushing a machine (whilst looking in the mirror)

- Have a ten minute rest and a gossip!

- Do numerous sets before moving onto the next machine for more 'hard work'.

- Leave the gym over an hour later without breaking a sweat but having caught up on the latest sporting events.

- Following morning -Feel nothing!

- Following year - Look the same!

There are only so many years of your life you can do this same routine with minimal results before you acknowledge that SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE! For me, this was the discovery of functional training; a combination of Olympic lifting, "cardio", gymnastics, competition and variation, all thrown together with a touch of fun and excitement.

I realised that this was definately the way forward and so I enrolled on the Level One Crossfit Certification based in Ireland. This was a two day intense fitness course which certainly separated the men from the boys. However I LOVED IT and couldn't wait to share my knowledge with all the other bored trainee's out there. For me, this type of training is fantastic because it defines what fitness really is; I became stronger, fitter, leaner and fitness became a sport of its own.

FUNCT FITNESS was established on 1st November 2009. We are a functional strength and conditioning training facility which offers state of the art training techniques to the general public. WE MAKE YOU THE PRIORITY! This is not just a 'gym' or a 'training facility' but a gathering of like-minded individuals who want to get results in the quickest time. Funct Fitness is a social scene where conversation centres around the latest inch loss, strength increase and satisfied customers!

I have been CrossFitting for approximately 2 years now and still enjoy the challenges that every WOD brings. CrossFit is the type of training program which enables you to continue progressing beyond your "peak" because there are always new things to master!

Throughout my childhood I was never encouraged to take part in sports and was never interested in fitness, competition etc. My list of "weaknesses" were as long as my arm and therefore in the last two years I have had a lot to work on - I am still nowhere near the end because every day there is something new that I suck at! However, this is the fun of CrossFit - it doesn't get boring, repetitive or tedious. Even for someone with NO fitness background I can get involved and be part of a community where it doesn't matter where you come from, how strong you are or how fast you can run.
